Leis are strung together by a series of flowers, leaves, shells, feathers, bones, gum, candies or fabric and is worn around the neck.

In the early boat travel days of the 1900s, lei vendors around Aloha Tower commonly greeted mainland visitors and returning residents with leis. Leis quickly became a symbol of Hawaii and the Aloha spirit.

Leis are commonly given and received at special functions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and graduations.
